Your local Hyundai dealership will soon reap the benefits of a new collaboration between Hyundai Motor Group and Boston Dynamics. In the pursuit of new technology, these two companies are spearheading advancements in AI and robotics to assist in making vehicles even smarter.

$400 Million For New AI Institute

The new institute is led by the founder of Boston Dynamics and will invest numerous resources in different areas of AI, including cognitive, athletic, and organic hardware. The new institute intends to recruit widely from different types of talent to address robotics research and the engineering of both software and hardware. This new institute has been dubbed the Boston Dynamics AI Institute and its stated goal is to advance AI, robotics, and other intelligent machines. The initial investment between both Hyundai and Boston Dynamics is $400 million. As a research-dominated organization, the new institute plans to work on solving some of the most important and challenging areas of creating advanced AI.

Combining University Research With Corporate Development

The culture of the Boston Dynamics AI Institute will be geared towards combining the best elements of university research labs with the same from corporate development labs. They expect to work in four major technical areas:

• Cognitive AI
• Athletic AI
• Organic hardware design
• Ethics and policy

According to the executive director, the mission of the institute is to create a new generation of advanced and intelligent machines in many areas of life. These machines will be smarter, more perceptive, safer, and more versatile than ever before. To successfully achieve these advances, the institute will invest in the core areas listed above and partner with other universities and research labs to accelerate development. The Boston Dynamics AI Institute will have its headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Hyundai Announces New Plans

In a separate announcement, Hyundai also announced new plans for establishing a global software center to lead software development and technology. The goal here is to advance the design and development of Software Defined Vehicles. Like many other automakers these days, Hyundai is looking for ways to make advancements in the field of intelligent vehicles. More AI means more active safety features in vehicles and more options in the area of autonomous driving. To that end, Hyundai also recently acquired 42dot, which is a startup working in the areas of autonomous driving software and mobility platforms. The Global Software Center will combine with 42dot in working on new software technologies.
