What do you get when you take a Mustang Dark Horse street car and transform it into a track-ready racer? You get the Ford Mustang GT3.

While you won’t find this version of the Mustang at a Ford dealer, you will find it at 24 Hours of Le Mans. Ford officially debuted it and entered it into the global FIA GT3 category.

The First Ever Mustang in the GT3 Series

Ford unveiled the Mustang GT3 on the night before the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The car is the result of a collaboration with Troy Lee, one of the most recognized motorsports designers. This Mustang is Lee’s first time working with Ford, and the result is a bold and colorful look for the GT3. The reveal officially entered the Mustang into the FIA GT3 category, a first for the Mustang. The last time Ford entered the 24 Hours of Le Mans was with the Ford GT back in 2016. The GT3 will enter its first race in the 2024 season.

Ford, Start Your Engine

Power for the Mustang GT3 is a modified version of the Coyote V-8 engine with 5.4 liters. The engine comes from Ford’s partnership with M-Sport and is expected to generate somewhere in the range of 500 horsepower. It will work with a six-speed XTrac transaxle gearbox mounted in the rear. Another one of Ford’s partners, Multimatic, the company that built the latest generation GT, will also help with the building of the GT3 and then provide support throughout the racing season.

What About the Production Version of the 2024 Mustang?

Looking for a new Mustang that you can find a Ford dealer? The Mustang enters its seventh generation with the 2024 model. This latest version has some style and powertrain updates and a fresh list of trims for those who want to feel the speed of a race car but still want to take to the streets. You can even find the the Dark Horse model that the GT3 is based on. It gets power from a 4.5-liter Coyote V-8 engine that kicks out 500 horsepower and gets 418 pound-feet of torque. Just like the GT3, it has a six-speed manual transmission with rev-matching, but you can opt for a 10-speed automatic if you prefer.

New Ford Performance Branding

Ford unveiled more than just the GT3 at Le Mans. They also revealed the new look for Ford Performance. It’s a cleaner look for the brand that will now be featured on the racing vehicles. The goal of the new branding is to give Ford Performance a new identity. Ford Performance wants to be a lifestyle brand with a sport-oriented mindset. The new look, with its simplistic design, can easily be integrated across all types of merchandise, vehicles, and spaces.

There are some exciting things going on in Ford’s racing world, but you can find excitement at your local Ford dealer too. The 2024 Mustang is here and ready to hit the road.
