Mercedes to Go All-Electric in Near Future

A few years from now, we will see some of the Mercedes-Benz plants producing nothing but all-electric vehicles.

For now, that’s not the case. The market continues to demand hybrids, gasoline-only vehicles, and in some markets, diesel-powered vehicles. Because of this mixed demand, Mercedes isn’t jumping all-in on production plants making only battery-electric cars. Instead, many plants will have production lines that make electric models alongside gasoline vehicles. This allows this brand to meet the market’s current demands and provides a strong mix of vehicles from this luxury name.

The Speed of Electric Vehicle Growth is Staggering

We know about the plans in the United States for at least half of all vehicles sold to be electric models by 2030, but that same plan is showing up in other parts of the world as well. Last year, Mercedes-Benz sold only 2.3 percent of all-electric vehicles across their lineup. If you add plug-in hybrid models, that number is 11 percent. By 2025, the plan is to have these vehicles make up 50 percent of the sales, with most of them coming from all-electric vehicles. That’s an incredible rise in electric vehicle sales in just a short time.

What Does Mercedes-Benz Offer that is an EV?

The 2022 lineup of electric Mercedes-Benz vehicles includes the EQS and EQB, with the new EQE coming for the 2023 model year. Let’s take a look at each of these EV models to give you an idea of where this company is going with its all-electric plan.

Mercedes-Benz EQS

The Mercedes-Benz EQS is Impressive

If you’ve admired the Mercedes-Benz S Class sedan and wanted an electric version, here it is. The EQS is a large luxury sedan that uses only electric power for the drive. Technically, this car is a five-door hatchback, but calling it that seems a little disrespectful. The EQS has its own chassis, which opens the cabin area to make it roomier than its gasoline-powered counterpart. You’ll find an incredible level of technology and features from the cockpit that make this car absolutely amazing to drive.

How Much Power Does the EQS Provide?

The first model of this Mercedes-Benz electric sedan gives you a rear-mounted electric motor in the 450+ model or a pair of motors to add the benefits of 4Matic AWD in the EQS 580 model. The 450+ model returns 329 horsepower and 419 lb.-ft. of torque while offering a driving range of 350 miles. The 580 4Matic version provides 516 horsepower, 631 lb.-ft. of torque, and 340 miles of driving on a full charge. Early next year, we will see an AMG version of the EQS. This model will have a pair of electric motors tuned up to 649 horsepower and 700 lb.-ft. of torque. While sportier, this version will still give you 300 miles of driving range when it’s fully charged.

Loaded With Standard Equipment

Even in its base form, the Mercedes-Benz EQS is packed with items you want during your drive. This all-electric luxury sedan offers:

  • Burmester surround-sound system
  • Tilt-and-slide panoramic roof
  • Dual-zone automatic climate controls
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Acoustic Comfort Package
  • Parking Package
  • Surround-view monitor
  • Fingerprint scanner for driver authentication
  • 12.3-inch driver display
  • 12.8-inch central display
  • 12.3-inch front passenger screen

As you would expect, more equipment is found at the higher trims, giving you a purely luxurious experience in a Mercedes-Benz EV.

Mercedes-Benz EQB

The Mercedes-Benz EQB is the Electric Crossover You Want

If you’re familiar with the naming strategy from Mercedes-Benz, you know that letters at the start of the alphabet signal smaller vehicles. The EQB is smaller than a GLC but larger than a GLA, making it a compact crossover that uses only electric power for the drive. This is an ideal spot for Mercedes-Benz to fit into the market and offer a crossover. The popularity of small SUVs is astounding, and this entry gives this brand an excellent chance at selling at a high rate.

Unique Cargo Options in the EQB

This new electric crossover from Mercedes-Benz gives us a roomy vehicle and has a unique feature to make it more useful. The rear seat slides 5.5 inches forward or backward to give your rear passengers more legroom or offer more cargo space for your gear. With the rear seats folded down, you’ll find upwards of 50 cubic feet for your stuff.

How Much Power Does this Crossover Provide

The all-electric EQB uses two electric motors, giving you the benefits of 4Matic AWD, giving you more control when faced with bad weather. The power reaches 225 horsepower and 288 lb.-ft. of torque in the 300 model and 288 horsepower and 384 lb.-ft. of torque for the 350 version. The driving range is approximately 250 miles for either version of this SUV.

Mercedes-Benz EQE

2023 Brings us the New Mercedes-Benz EQE

The E Class sedan is one of the most attractive and elegant cars in the market, making an electric version an easy addition to the market. The EQE enters the new model year as a sedan that gives you the all-electric drive you desire with a price that’s much less than the EQS. The chassis of the EQE is shorter than the regular E Class, but it has more cabin room because of the electric drivetrain.

Early Power/Late Power

When the initial versions of the Mercedes-Benz EQE arrive, they will have a single rear-mounted electric motor that produces 288 horsepower and 391 lb.-ft. of torque. These RWD models should have a driving range of 300 miles and can reach the electronically-limited top speed of 130 mph.

Early in 2023, we expect to see the AMG version of this car. That model will have two electric motors that make 617 horsepower and 701 lb.-ft. of torque. This impressive power will go to all four wheels, giving you the 4Matic AWD version of the EQE. The driving range will be 250 miles, but the acceleration is impressive at 3.4 seconds to reach sixty mph compared to 5.6 seconds for the RWD version.

The All-Electric Plan for Mercedes-Benz is Unfolding

You can see where this brand is going. The plan is to offer half of its lineup with electric or hybrid powertrains by 2025. With three models in the mix by the end of this year, the next electric vehicle from Mercedes-Benz is likely to be another crossover or SUV. It won’t be long before your options are gasoline or electric for every model this brand offers. Thankfully, we see the commitment to the AMG-powered versions, with one for each of the three EVs already in production.
