SRW vs DRW: Does it Really Make a Difference?

When you take your spec list into your Ford dealer, be realistic about the weight and type of payload you plan to haul with your Ford F-350 or Ford F-450. DRW trucks (a.k.a. “duallys”) offer more stability, and their higher gross vehicle weight (GVWR) allows for additional payload and pulling capacity.

Carry That Weight

So, just how much can you load in the cargo bed? According to Ford’s specs, you’ll get the most payload capacity in the 2021 F-350. It offers 7,850 pounds in the Regular Cab/Long Box combination and carries around 7,000 pounds when combining the long bed with either the SuperCab or Crew Cab.

That doesn’t mean the F-450lacks muscle. The Long Box (the only option in the F-450) combined with the Crew Cab lets you load 5,320 pounds, and with the Regular Cab, you’ll max out at 5,900 pounds.

Towing is where the F-450 really stands above other trucks. It’s ready for gooseneck and 5th wheel towing right off the lot and can pull up to 37,000 pounds. So, if you’ve been holding off on the RV trailer you’ve had your eye on, here’s the truck that can make your cross-country dreams come true.

The F-350 is also a pulling powerhouse with a 20,000-pound conventional towing capacity. It also tows up to 35,750 with gooseneck/5th wheel, but you’ll need to purchase and install the towing package to do so.

Making Turns in Tight Places

Trying to turn most large pickups feels a lot like trying to make a U-turn in a 747. Maneuverability is where the Ford F-450 shines. Its wide-track front suspension offers a smaller turning radius making it easier to operate with a trailer and make those 3-point turns in tight places.

If your truck is doubling as your daily driver, you’ll probably like the ride quality more with the F-350’s 17-inch wheels. Keep in mind, though, if you’re not towing with the F-450, you don’t need to max out the PSI. Letting them go a little low will smooth out your ride.
