Because we now have the Tesla Model 3 on the market, there’s a good chance the move to the new Model Y will be a smooth one. In a recent announcement, Tesla informed the world that the Model Y would be offered starting in 2020 and pre-orders for this new SUV have already begun. It’snot likely the Model Y will have the same following as the Model 3 to start with, but there are some good reasons why Tesla will be able to finally deliver on a deadline and begin to have this SUV offered as promised.

What is the Tesla Model Y?

The new Tesla Model Y is the first compact crossover SUV that will be offered by the brand. This new vehicle is being built on the same platform as the current Model 3 to give us the small size we’re looking for along with the range we want to enjoy. The fact that the Model Y will use the same platform as the Model 3 and that Tesla now understands how to build a larger number of vehicles over a shorter period of time gives us the hope that this SUV will be offered when promised with no delays.

Four Versions Will be Offered

Tesla has already shared the plans and expectations of the four Model Y choices that you will have. These four will be the Standard Range RWD, Long Range RWD, Long Range AWD, and Performance models. The standard range model will give you up to 230 miles of driving of a full charge and it will cost $39,000. The Long Range RWD model gives you 300 miles of driving at a price of $49,000, while the AWD version will cost $53,000 and give you a range of 280 miles. The Performance model is at the top of the range and it gives you 280 miles of driving and the acceleration to reach sixty mph in 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 150 mph. All this will cost you $62,000.

A First Look is Right

It’s easy to see that Tesla kept things fairly simple in the Model Y. The interior looks the same as the Model 3 with the only change being that the cabin size is greater to give you more headroom and more cargo space for your drive. The screen up front is a 15-inch touchscreen interface that takes over as the dashboard you need with the items you want in front of you.

No Punches Pulled by Tesla

The new Tesla Model Y is compatible with the global Supercharger grid that offers you more than 12,000 charging stations in 36 countries. You can configure and order the Model Y you want to drive right now and know that it will be offered in a similar fashion to the Model 3. The higher trim levels will arrive first and are expected in the Fall of 2020 while the base model will not be available until the Spring of 2021.
