Big families have specific transportation needs compared to other demographics. A large family hauler has to be spacious enough for passengers and cargo, while also providing plenty of amenities. If you’re a big family with big hobbies like boating, horseback riding, or camping, a large SUV with a hefty towing capacity is needed. Let’s take a look at three fantastic large SUVs that can haul the fam and tow the toys.

Chevrolet Suburban

When it comes to big family haulers, the Chevrolet Suburban is hard to beat. It’s the most spacious big SUV out there and features strong V8 engines for towing ability. Despite its extra large footprint, its ride and handling are more agile than you might expect. For safety, the Suburban gets a four out of five stars rating from the NHTSA, but it doesn’t have as many advanced safety features as some rivals.

Where the Suburban excels is in its interior space and towing ability. Depending on the configuration, you can seat up to nine passengers in the Suburban. The cargo area maxes out at 144.7 cubic feet with both rows folded and it offers a power liftgate to make loading easier. The most capable Suburban models can tow up to 8,300 pounds.

GMC Yukon

With some potent engine options, a fuel-efficient turbodiesel option, and a smooth ride, the GMC Yukon is a great option for families who want something a bit more refined. Like the Suburban, the Yukon gets four out of five stars for overall safety from the NHTSA. It has more advanced standard safety features than the Suburban.

Seating for eight passengers in the Yukon is standard with two roomy front rows. If you opt for the Yukon XL, you can get 144.7 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear rows. However, the regular Yukon models have 122.9 cubic feet. The GMC Yukon has several family-friendly features like wireless device charging and a rear-seat entertainment system. The GMC Yukon can tow up to 7,900 in its most capable form.

Ford Expedition

Although the Ford Expedition has less cabin room in its regular form than the above SUVs, it compensates well in other areas. It offers powerful engine options and an excellent towing capacity of 9,000 pounds when properly equipped. The Expedition also gets five out of five stars from the NHTSA in crash protection, plus it offers quite a few standard safety features.

The Ford Expedition can be configured to seat seven or eight people and all three rows are quite spacious for adults. The cargo volume in the regular Expedition is 104.6 at maximum. The Expedition Max version does better with 121.5 cubic feet, but it’s still a bit smaller than the other two SUVs on this list. Like the Yukon, the Expedition boasts a lot of family-friendly features, including a Wi-Fi hot spot and standard tri-zone automatic climate control.

These three SUVs are fantastic choices for any large family that also wants to tow. If you don’t need as much room or as much towing capacity, some honorable mentions include the Toyota Sequoia, Nissan Armada, and Jeep Wagoneer.
