The King of Power Title Goes to the Mustang GTD

The King of Power Title Goes to the Mustang GTD

The race to the top of the power hill just keeps going. It seems like every year, there’s a faster muscle or sports car with better performance.

This year, the Ford Mustang GTD is the one Ford dealers are bragging about. It’s the fastest Mustang in history, raising the bar once again.

Power, Powe, and More Power

So, what’s under the hood of the Mustang GTD that makes it so fast and powerful? A 5.2-liter V-8 might sound familiar, but the GTD’s version has some tweaks to make it better. The 815 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque are achieved through a few updates. Mustang developed its first dry-sump oil system that works to keep the engine more lubricated, even when drivers are testing out how fast they can take tight corners, again and again.

But performance is not just horsepower; it’s also about what you can reach on the odometer. The Mustang GTD delivers with a top speed of 202 miles per hour.

Yes, More Power Than the Porsche 911 GT3 RS

One of the goals of the Mustang GTD is to outperform the Porsche GT3 RS. And it can do it! It beats the Porsche in terms of power output and density. Power for the GT3 RS comes from a six-cylinder water-cooled engine with four valves per cylinder and a dry sump oil system. But even with all this, the 518 horsepower just doesn’t touch the new Ford Mustang.

Road Worthy Ford Mustang Models

You won’t find the Mustang GTD at your Ford dealer, and the application window closed a long time ago. Buyers who were lucky enough to order got it for the low starting price of $325,000.

But that’s ok. You don’t have to get a GTD to experience the fun of a Mustang. The street-worthy models designed for the everyday muscle car-lover offer plenty of power. The engine lineup provides varying levels of power, from a turbo four-cylinder with 315 horsepower to a 5.0-liter V-8 with 480 horses. If you want to splurge a little, the Mustang Dark Horse has an edgy look and 500 horsepower.

Get Your Own Special Edition Mustang

While the GTD may be out of reach if you want a unique Mustang, there’s more on the horizon. A 60th Anniversary Mustang Special Edition is coming for 2025. In celebration of 60 years, which takes us back to 1965, there will be exactly 1,965 of these special editions produced.

The package will have a red, white and blue color scheme, dark gravity five-spoke wheels, with a red stamped center cap to look like the center caps on the 1965 ‘Stang. The 60th Anniversary editions will also get Nite Pony headlights and a mesh grille that will take you right back to the 1965 Mustang.

While the Mustang GTD has more power than ever seen before in a Mustang, it’s not for the everyday driver. You can go to a Ford dealer and find a selection of Mustang models that will bring you some extra fun behind the wheel on your daily drive.
