Hyundai Ioniq 7: Spacious Electric SUV Set for 2025 Launch, Hopefully

The Hyundai Ioniq 7 is coming, and it will be the cousin of the already popular Kia EV9. This new Hyundai provides three rows of electric SUV comfort.

This new electric SUV is supposed to be a living space on wheels. Much like the Palisade with its high-end materials and qualities, the new Ioniq 7 should come as close as a mainstream SUV to being a luxury vehicle without crossing that line. This new electric SUV rides on the E-GMP platform, shared with the smaller Ioniq 5 and Kia EV models. We haven’t gotten much more than a glimpse at this new SUV, but it should break ground for the 2025 model year.

Will this Hyundai match the Kia?

When Hyundai and Kia gave us the Telluride and Palisade, they did so with the same powertrain and platform under each three-row midsize SUV. The differences between these two models came down to branding and styling. We expect the same thing to happen with the new Ioniq 7, which should match the Kia EV9 for power and powertrain offerings.

This means we should see a single-motor RWD model that makes 215 horsepower as the base version, with an AWD dual-motor version delivering 379 horsepower as the higher powertrain. While Kia loves to go for performance power and will have the GT model that delivers 576 horsepower, we’re unsure if this top power selection will be offered for the new Hyundai Ioniq 7.

In addition to power levels matching Kia, the new Hyundai electric SUV could have two different battery options, providing as much as 230 miles of driving range for the 76.1-kWh battery pack and more than 300 miles of driving range from the 99.87 kWh battery.

What trims will be offered?

Although we don’t know much about the new Ioniq 7, we expect this larger electric SUV to offer a similar lineup of trims as the smaller Ioniq 5. This smaller electric SUV comes in SE, SEL, and Limited trims to give you three great options. The larger, three-row model will likely use the same names and reserve the Limited trim for the model with the most features and high-end materials.

Will this electric SUV be comfortable?

The new Hyundai Ioniq 7 could be one of the most comfortable new vehicles to enter the market. This will only happen if it follows its concept model with a production version that’s extremely similar. The beauty of this big SUV with room for a large family is the flat floor. Because its an EV, there’s no need for a transmission tunnel, which makes it easy to make better use of the space in the cabin. The flat floor makes this electric SUV feel much larger than its gas-powered counterpart.

Additionally, because the powertrain elements are under the floor and on the wheels, the area where an engine would normally reside can be used for something else. This also means more cabin space for passengers, which translates to more legroom and comfort for all passengers.

What might not make it to production?

The Ioniq 7 is a mainstream vehicle, which means mass production and high sales volume are expected to ensure this SUV’s success. The concept version of this electric SUV features a set of rear-hinged doors in the back, also known as suicide doors, to offer a large opening. This door style and the lack of B-pillars would be an excellent way to make this Hyundai SUV much easier to step into and out of, but this feature won’t likely make it to production. If this were a high-end luxury vehicle from a boutique automaker, the rear-hinged doors would survive.

Another item that we don’t expect to see is the retractable control stick that is even stranger than the yoke-style wheel in some Tesla models. The concept also features a built-in mini refrigerator, a place to refresh your footwear, and a large OLED screen that is also the panoramic roof. All of these items would likely push the price of the Hyundai Ioniq 7 to heights that would put it out of range for most Hyundai shoppers.

We have to wait a bit longer

Originally, reports suggested this new Hyundai electric SUV would arrive in June, but that didn’t happen. Is Hyundai being cagey and coy, or is this new electric vehicle still not ready to hit the production line? When will we see the new Hyundai Ioniq 7? Hopefully, this SUV will appear as part of the 2025 model lineup later in the fall or winter.
