A successor to the extinct Mazda6 is heading to China. This new Mazda EZ-6 is a new electric car that delivers an impressive driving range.
Pretty soon, we’re going to get tired of seeing China get all of the new toys. The latest of these is a new electric Mazda sedan that should be an impressive addition to the market. This new Mazda will come in a fully electric version and a plug-in hybrid. Both models should deliver impressive driving ranges, albeit on the Chinese cycle. Still, this new Mazda sedan could be much better than the previous Mazda EV venture.
What was the first Mazda EV venture?
While many automakers have littered the market with EVs, Mazda has struggled in this arena. The first venture into the EV world was the subcompact Mazda MX-30. In America, this little SUV was only sold in California and was limited to only 100 miles of driving. This short driving range and limited market meant the MX-30 only lasted two model years.
Although we don’t know when the next electric Mazda will make it to American shores, Mazda has redeemed itself with the new CX-90, which can be had with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
But I digress.
What is this new electric sedan
The Mazda EZ-6 brings much of what we admired about the Mazda6 to the Chinese market. This new electric Mazda sedan has the midsize build to give passengers ample room in the cabin. Because its an EV, there isn’t a transmission tunnel the cabin space is maximized with a flat floor that ensures every seat has plenty of legroom. This new Mazda electric sedan was recently revealed at the Beijing Auto Show, which gives us a much better idea of what this new vehicle will bring to the market.
Joining teams with a Chinese automaker
Many of the new EVs heading to the Chinese market are the result of partnerships with non-Chinese automakers and at least one domestic company. In the case of the new EZ-6, this partnership is between Mazda and Changan. This new electric sedan should go on sale by the end of the year, offering impressive features and qualities that make it a great option. This new sedan brings a sleek shape and impressive stance to the market. It should have a long, thin headlight bar that flows into a wide, squared-off grille. The rear lights will look similar but have circular elements near the sides of the car.
Going inside, the cabin of this new electric sedan has impressive rich materials and two large screens. The central infotainment screen measures 14.6-inches while the digital gauge cluster measures 10.2-inches. There’s a wireless charging pad in the center console, giving this area simple design. The cabin has some wood trim and a set of rear seat vents in the back of the car. The infotainment system has voice and gesture controls, making it easy for you to control the system and have the desired apps and information while driving.
Two versions will be offered
The new Mazda EZ-6 has an electric powertrain that resides on the rear wheels, giving this car the RWD system many drivers enjoy. Mazda claims a 50/50 weight distribution for the new EZ-6, which could make it fun to drive on some highways. The new EV version of this car uses a front strut suspension and a rear multilink system.
Mazda will also offer a plug-in hybrid version of this new car, giving it an impressive system for driving. Unfortunately, no details have been revealed about the engine that will be part of the PHEV system.
The PHEV version should return up to 620 miles of driving range, while the new electric vehicle model has a quoted 370-mile driving range.
An electric Mazda SUV is on the way
In addition to the new Mazda EZ-6, the brand unveiled a new concept SUV model called the Arata. This new SUV is also expected to go into production for the Chinese market as the brand’s second EV. It should be on sale by the end of 2025. This new SUV has a handsome appearance with think headlights, a blanked-off grille, and a slanted D-pillar.
These new electric SUVs make us wonder when Mazda will add more EVs to the American market. The new Mazda EZ-6 could be extremely useful in America as both versions. The rise of PHEVs could make this new sedan a cornerstone vehicle as Mazda moves toward the future. This new sedan could be the fun-to-drive electric Mazda that’s ideal for future family driving needs.
