Which Used Cars or SUVs Last the Longest?

Buying used SUVs, trucks, and cars can help drivers save money, or it can leave drivers with expensive repair bills. Get a good deal and avoid buying a lemon by finding out which used cars last the longest and sticking to that list at the car dealership.

These Vehicles Just Keep Running

Some used SUVs, cars, and other personal vehicles have established reputations for longevity. Smart drivers don’t make decisions based on hearsay, though. They look for concrete proof that a particular car will outperform its competition as the years go by.

The used cars, trucks, and SUVs on this list are here because they have more than just good reputations. They have proven their mettle on America’s roads, year after year.

The Ford F-Series Trucks Are Built to Last Across the Lineup

The Ford F-150, F-250, and F-350 are some of America’s most popular new trucks, which is good news for drivers who prefer to buy used ones because it means there are more of them on the market.

According to one recent study performed by iSeeCars, the F-150 lasts an average of 232,650 miles without needing major repairs, which is a good run for any vehicle.

The recent generations of F-150 trucks can tow up to 14,000 lbs without ruining its 19.1% chance of hitting the 250,000 mi mark. However, drivers planning to put their F-series trucks through heavy use should consider a medium-duty F-250 or heavy-duty F-350.

These Used SUVs Have Even Better Longevity

Used light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks often get high marks for longevity, but they can’t compare to the top-performing used SUVs. The Chevrolet Suburban is an excellent example.

With an average potential lifespan of 265,732 mi across all model years, the Chevy Suburban is the third-most likely vehicle to reach the 250,000-mile mark. These used SUVs often make it well over 150,000 miles before experiencing any serious problems.

At Least One EV Now Makes the Cut

When they first started coming out, no one expected electric vehicles (EVs) to compete with traditional cars in the longevity realm. However, the Toyota Prius has been out long enough to prove that assumption wrong.

With an average potential lifespan of 250,601 miles, the Prius is the only EV to make most experts’ lists. As other automakers continue to experiment with hybrid and plug-in electric cars, that should change.

Electric vehicles, in particular, could boast significantly longer lifespans than most traditional cars since their design is relatively simple and they have fewer moving parts than combustion engines.

While used EVs can last for years, the batteries lose capacity over time, decreasing their range. Replacing the batteries can be expensive but typically resolves this problem.

Is It Worth Buying Used?

So, should drivers who want their vehicles to go the distance still consider used SUVs, cars, and trucks? The expert opinion is in, and it’s a resounding yes.

Along with the three top-performing used vehicles in their classes described above, the Ford Expedition, Toyota 4Runner, Honda Odyssey, and GMC Yukon are also worth a test drive.

Every make and model year is different, and so is each vehicle. Take the time to inspect used cars thoroughly before deciding which one to buy.
