5 New Features to Note on the 2022 Toyota Camry

One of the most popular cars in the market continues to get better. The 2022 Toyota Camry shows improvements you’ll admire in a car you’ve loved driving for a long time. Generations of Americans turn to the Camry every year to be the midsize sedan that fits perfectly and offers a quality driving experience. If you’re making a list of sedans to compare, the Camry will find its way to the top of the list in almost every category. Let’s take a look at a few things that make this car special.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.5

The already impressive Toyota Safety Sense package got a shot in the arm. The 2.5 package gives you more systems to keep you alert and out of trouble. The radar-based adaptive cruise control functions at all speeds, allowing you to stay a safe distance from other vehicles. This system will bring the vehicle to a complete stop, and it can slow down fur curves to ensure you don’t ever feel your car is going too fast around a turn. This version of the cruise control system works with the lane-centering feature to keep you between the lines.

You’ll also find the rear cross-traffic alert system has automatic braking with Intelligent Clearance Sonar. This sonar system detects if there are objects in front of your vehicle and won’t allow you to hit the accelerator hard enough to go crashing into the object. The autonomous emergency braking now detects pedestrians and cyclists to keep you out of more trouble.

These new items add to what we already admire about the Toyota Safety Sense system in the Toyota Camry, which includes:

Improved Driver and Rear Seats in the 2022 Toyota Camry

Your Camry now comes with a ten-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with two memory positions. The programable car key fob is still offered, which allows you to set the positions for the steering column, driver seat, and side mirrors on either of the two keys issues with each vehicle.

The rear seats of the Toyota Camry now include an electric reclining function. The new center armrest has a control panel built into it to adjust the rear climate functions and the heating and cooling for the rear seats. There are also controls for the audio system and sunshades in this center armrest area, making this an upgrade you might not expect to find in a Toyota sedan.

The New Transmission is Excellent

A brand-new Direct Shift eight-speed automatic transmission replaces the outgoing six-speed version. This means you’ll have two more gears, better gearing ratios, and a smoother ride on the road. Even though this new transmission has two more gears, it is more compact than the outgoing unit.

Part of this new setup in the Camry is a new clutch system that sits between the transmission and torque converter. This item, called a lockup control multiple disc clutch, allows for smoother driving when the clutch is disengaged. During this operation, the power transfers via the fluid flow, which keeps things running smoothly for you. Once the clutch re-engages, the power flows directly to the transmission, which provides you with a more direct driving feel.

The Two Engines Offered in the 2022 Toyota Camry

This new transmission mate to either of the two engines offered in the Toyota Camry. Most trims use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, making 206 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque. If you select the XSE or TRD models of the Camry, you’ll have a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 301 horsepower and 267 lb.-ft. of torque.

Using the new transmission allows these engines to run smoothly and provide more power to the wheels than ever before.

A Subtle Different to the Front Fascia

You might need to see a side-by-side image of the 2019 Camry and the new 2022 Camry to notice the differences in the front face of the new car. Toyota’s goal is to create a “beautiful monster” with the Camry, and this new front area helps make that happen.

The lower grille of the Camry has the same seven horizontal strips, but the two at the top do not run the full width of the front. The bumper appears to hold the lower grille on either side to keep everything together. There’s now a C-shaped chrome trim where the strips meet up with the bumper to give this area of the car a finished look.

These changes to the front of the Toyota Camry allow this car to look finished and more mature than it did before. You might not notice the differences without reading through this list or seeing them next to an older version of the car, but you will notice this front end looks amazing.

A New Infotainment Screen and More Systems

Toyota was slow to embrace adding Android Auto to its infotainment system. Prior to the 2022 model year, most of the vehicles from this brand came with Apple CarPlay, but not Android Auto. Now, the Entune infotainment system contains both of these connectivity features to give you an easy way to connect and enjoy the drive. Unfortunately, wireless versions of either system are not available in the Toyota Camry yet.

A new screen is a part of what you see in this midsize sedan. This new system is nine inches in size versus the outgoing eight-inch unit. The air conditioning vents moved below the system, giving this screen the right position in the center stack to make room for this new system. At some trim levels, you can have wireless phone charging in this car, making it an easy sedan for you to drive.
