The Hyundai Tucson Gets A Plug-In Hybrid Model in 2022

Hyundai Tucson

When news came that the Hyundai Tucson would be available in a plug-in hybrid option, drivers everywhere rejoiced. This news comes soon after the Hyundai Tucson N Line model was announced, so you could say it’s a pretty exciting time for this popular SUV.

These two models join the gas-powered and hybrid powertrains to provide drivers with four powerful powertrain options.

Here are some of the top highlights about this highly anticipated eco-friendly SUV:

Nothing Beats a Turbo

When you look under the hood of the new Hyundai Tucson plug-in hybrid, you’ll find a potent 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces a solid 261 horsepower. This engine is matched with a six-speed automatic transmission. It’s also paired with an electric motor.

The Hyundai Tucson plug-in hybrid uses a 13.8-kWh battery pack that will give you up to 32 miles of electric-only range. When you’re not cruising on electricity, the hybrid engine has an EPA-estimated 70 mpg.

Charging is meant to be simple. This SUV supports Level 2 charging up to 7.2 kW. It’s really meant to be plugged in overnight at home versus being hooked up to a charging station out in public.

The Competition is Getting Hotter

As of right now, there aren’t too many plug-in hybrids in this space. The Hyundai Tucson’s biggest rival is the Toyota RAV4 Prime. There are quite a few similarities between these two plug-in hybrids that make them fairly equal.

The Toyota RAV4 Prime does offer a slightly better electric range of 42 miles. Hyundai hasn’t made the new Tucson’s pricing available just yet, but all signs point to it starting around $35,000, which is making it less expensive than the $39,000 RAV4 Prime.

The exciting news is that you should expect to see more plug-in and electric options in this class in the near future. For the moment, the Tucson is a hard plug-in hybrid to beat.

Two Amazing Trims

While the Hyundai Tucson comes with various powertrains, configurations, and options, the plug-in version only has two trims: SEL and Limited. Both of these models come in at above the base-level Tucson, but each offers its own charms.

Here are some of the highlights of the SEL model:
