Is Your Track Day Covered?

Is Your Track Day Covered

What’s the point of driving a sports car if you can’t take it to the track for some fun. If you own a car that’s recognized as a powerful, sporty model that can be the right one to have on the track to turn some laps, you want to make sure you’re not going to lose your entire car just because you have a wreck or an incident at the track. Unfortunately, most of us have insurance that’s extremely clear about the coverage and where it exists, which isn’t at the track that you want to race on.

Imagine going to the Porsche dealership to choose the 911 that has the power and qualities you want for the drive on the track. Once you drive this car home you go online and begin to shop for the different racing items you want so that you can have the fun and experience that will be perfect for you at the track. After these items arrive at your home you get ready and head out to the track near your home to have a scheduled session of instruction about driving on a track and how you can turn fast laps.

While you’re out driving your new Porsche 911 at your chosen track you happen to slip and run into the wall of tires that lines the track. This causes some damage to the body of your car which you want to have covered and expect your insurance company to help you out with so that you can have the car repaired. Unfortunately, you’re going to find a huge surprise when you call your insurance company and tell them what you were doing when the vehicle was damaged during your fun and speedy session at the track.

The Coverage Needed

Most insurance companies don’t encourage or cover any experience you have at the track and you will see this if you read your insurance documents. The coverage ends and the vehicle isn’t covered when the incident occurs “inside a facility designed for racing”, which means you can have the Porsche 911, but you won’t be able to let it loose and see what it can do unless you find a way to have it covered by insurance when you head out to the track for a great ride. While most regular insurance companies won’t offer this, one will.

Lockton is the insurance company that makes it possible to fill this void in your coverage and allows you to race around the track and be covered during your track weekend. This insurance company approves and covers up to 1200 track days a year and issues a policy that starts and end with each event. In order to obtain one of these policies, you will have to answer a few questions about yourself and the car you will want to drive. After this, you submit your payment and you’ll have a policy with the coverage you need emailed to you right away.

You might be a lucky enough person to have the coverage that you need for the track day with your regular insurance carrier, but that’s unlikely. It’s not wise to rely on your insurance agent to know this information, their job is to sell policies but they probably won’t know all the details. Get a copy of your policy and take a look at it, but if you aren’t covered you will need to give Lockton or another insurance company of this type the coverage you need to be able to have at the track when you head out for a great day in your sports car.
